Art galleries can feel so sterile. But they’re not. They don’t deter germs any better than a sidewalk, a bus, a cab, a train, or your own car does.
When you enter an art gallery, the person at the front desk always says to you, “Let me know if you have any questions,” knowing full well that you won’t ask, even if you’re curious. Before you exit and swap out fluorescence for sunlight, you thank the same person, who now won’t even show their face. You don’t know why you do this; when you were younger, you saw a professor or two do it, so now you do it, too. This whole recycled routine is like a perpetually bad one-night stand and the morning after, all condensed into 30 minutes or less. Do you ever feel like you should have just ordered a pizza instead?
Okay, now you’re out of there. You’ve escaped supposed sterility and you’re back in the real world. You choose your mode of transportation and head to a bar. Which bar? Usually, you don’t choose. A friend does. Or the Internet does. After a few drinks, you start asking questions; you begin to answer them, as well. You avoid fluorescence; you avoid sunlight. You only want to see the contours of glass and flesh. Until the morning after.
When does art become art? Is it once something hangs on a white wall? Is it when a thing rests itself on wood or concrete? What about what gets stuck, suspended in air between two sets of lips?
Do me a favor: Write down an idea on this square, soft sheet of paper. You’re all out? What’s your number? Let’s go somewhere and make some art. What a concept!
